A lot of people seem to be confused on what they are actually debating about. Most people just like to open their mouths so they can be heard. Others have a valid point but are just saying what others have told them to believe. The truth is, no one has (to my knowledge) examined the fine points behind this debate, which is why it is still considered a debate. Well, if you are reading this, you are lucky enough to fully understand what we need to do to solve this issue. However, in order to solve this issue, unfortunately, our government needs to change its way of thinking.    Forgive me if this blog ends up being very lengthy, but to fully understand I need to highlight the finer points.
The most important part in determining if gay marriage should be legal is understanding what ‘marriage’ actually is. Marriage is a religious ceremony practiced by several, if not all religions that can be dated back to the very early beginnings of any given religion. As a Catholic, I can only confirm what Catholics believe so I will focus my explanation on that. When Catholics get married, they are basically uniting each others bodies and souls with God into one being. The Catholic bible teaches us that only a man and woman may become one (dont stop reading, this is not my point).
Now, this type of ceremony has been going on for thousands of years (pre-Catholics are considered Jews). When one challenges ones extremely old traditional ceremony, such as attempting to unite a man and man or woman and woman, there is bound to be controversy and push back. This is mostly the reason for the debate. Yet, to add fuel to the fire there is more. Not only are religions offended, the government cannot make up its mind. So allow me to clarify this, as well.
When this country was founded by our fore-fathers, they decided that each human being, man or woman, black or white, should equally have their own rights. They also decided (***This is the most important part of my argument so pay attention***) because there were so many problems with the old country, that it might be a good idea to separate church and state. Yet, many of the governmental practices today are still a product of the church…Such as Marriage. So when couples get married in their own ceremony (whether it be religions or not), they also have to register with the state to become legally married. This is where the front line is in this debate. Because the church does not recognize gay marriage, due to the bible’s teachings, neither does the state. This is why the state needs to disassociate itself from the church and become separate again.
My wife and I were married earlier this year in our church under God. We then decided to let the state know about it and then we became legally married. I couldn’t give a bigger shit if the state recognizes us as being married or not. What matters is that God has recognized us as being married. The only benefit I am getting from the state is a tax break.
***Here is the solution that would totally redefine the books***
The state needs to start considering everyone who decides to get together as: a civil union. Not just a man and woman, but everyone. These were the rights our fore-fathers gave us that are written down in our constitution. Once you are part of a civil union, you have been recognized by the state as being together.
On the other hand, the church is still going to practice what they have believed for thousands of years and unite a man and woman only. No one can argue or sue over this point because these are private beliefs. But the state is a public system and needs to recognize anyone who pays their taxes in this country as the way our fore-fathers intended.
In short: State=Public; Church =Private…Country=State/Church… and no more debate.
